Clothing without a shelf life.

The intriguing label “FRAUENSCHUH” is not an ingenious invention by the makers of shoes for elegant women. It is the actual surname of the founder of a small mid-century tannery in Kitzbühel. Hans Frauenshuh set out in 1950 to produce bespoke leather garments for a demanding clientele, employing the time-honoured if labour-intensive Samish method of using fish oil to soften deerskin. His and his family’s dedication to materials and methods which will stand the test of time inspired his descendants to learn and grow his production methods to include other sustainable materials. Since 1995 FRAUENSCHUH manufactures its own exclusive collection of timeless pieces – jackets, skirts and trousers made from Boiled Merino Wool, Wool Power stretch, Premium Softshell, Double Knit Wool Yarn and Eco Lambskin. An ecologically aware fashion trade is currently re-discovering these valuable materials, but few craftsmen can lay claim to the knowledge and skills needed to fully enhance their inherent qualities to make them truly sustainable. Frauenschuh has loved and worked with these materials for generations and turned them into striking items of clothing which are fashionable without a shelf-life. C. K.
